The Planning Department supervises all planning functions and related community activities in the borough and updates the Borough Comprehensive Plan. Planning also prepares and implements platting and zoning ordinances, administers the Alaska Coastal Management Plan, performs title 9 permitting, and provides administrative support to the Planning Commission and technical support and training to Village Planning Committees.

The Northwest Arctic Borough (NAB) and the Alaska Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) have created a series of Community Profile Maps as part of their joint project under the Alaska Coastal Management Program. Maps can viewed and printed.
