2004 KATTIVIK TRADE FAIR HIGHLIGHTS
The 2004 Kattivik Northwest Native Trade Fair was held July 5 – 7 and was revived when the Kotzebue Elders requested more cultural celebrations in the community. Quyannaq, arigaa taikuu to our Elders who continue to guide and give us direction to promoting Inupiaq celebrations!
This year’s celebration was dedicated to the late Clara Qichuaq Taylor who was very instrumental in planning and implementing past Trade Fairs. She did a lot of work as a volunteer and loved bringing people together to celebrate our Inupiaq culture.
Major financial contributors for the celebration were the National Park Service and the Northwest Arctic Borough. The entire community did a fantastic job in their willingness to host this year’s event. The planning committee did an exceptional job in making sure the event was successful. We had more than enough housing for visitors and even have approximately $20,000.00 left over for the next Kattivik celebration! The support of organizations and individuals was beyond expectation and very much appreciated.
People enjoyed sharing culture, food, friendly competition and yes, Eskimo Dancing! We look forward to continuing to host future Kattivik Trade Fair Gatherings! Dance groups included groups from Kotzebue, Russia, Wales, Diomede, Point Hope and Barrow.
Kattivik t-shirts and sweatshirts were ordered by the City of Kotzebue. Remaining t-shirts were contributed to sponsors of the trade fair. Eskimo face pins were crafted by many volunteers. The pins were awarded to first place finishers in the cultural events in addition to ribbons and cash prizes.
Heartbeat Alaska is in the process of creating a DVD which will be aired on statewide television this winter. Copies of the DVD will be made available upon completion.
Events were scheduled for Nuvuguraq but were cancelled due to weather. There was a lot of interest in traveling to Sisualik or Nuvugraq where historic gatherings were held in the past. Hopefully we can plan with Nuvugraqmuit and Noataqmuit to make it happen in the future!
