Noorvik – Ms. Jackson reported that Noorvik had the Ray Jackson Memorial Dog race and was a success.  This year they raised funds for the dog race with $1,000 left over and will re-invest it for next years dog race.  Sandy Beaver and Margaret Hansen sold raffle tickets for a 12-foot basket sled and satellite dish in Kotzebue.  Ms. Jackson thanked everyone that encouraged them to start up the Ray Jackson Memorial Sled Dog Race this year.

Mr. Robert Mulluk reported they enjoyed watching the Selma Newlin City League basketball games over the weekend, along with the snow machine and dog races.  He indicated that an elder started off the tournament advising the players that they are doing this in memory of someone and to show sportsmanship during the games.  The atmosphere and camaraderie was great for the basketball players, fans and everyone that participated in these events.  A dart competition was also held and they even had a dog musher from Huslia that participated in the dog races.

Mr. Mulluk reported that they are planning to celebrate Inupiaq Day this Friday and plan to take the school kids shee-fishing.  They had someone scouting for fish and they are preparing Easter Baskets for the Kobuk 440 sled dog racers who will be racing through Noorvik this week.  They would like to take the teachers to fish camp this spring and fall so that they can experience camp life and mosquitos.  Their life wouldn’t seem so difficult once they survive the mosquitos.

Mr. Mulluk reported they had 3-4 comprehensive plan meetings and they would like to be a recipient of a wellness grant from the First Alaska Institutes Grant Program.

Ms. Martha Whiting reminded everyone that the Healthy Communities Workshop on April 21-22 is being held at the Alaska Technical Center and that funds are available for travel.  Ms. Whiting reported that so far thirty people have signed up and she is hoping for fifty people.

Ms. Whiting also encouraged everyone to start producing arts and crafts for the Trade Fair to be held the week of July 5th.  Ms. Whiting also announced that the month of April is being celebrated as the Nikaitchuat Inupiaq Language Awareness month.  A variety of cultural activities are planned for the month of April.

Ms. Whiting reminded everyone that this is our last village teleconference until fall time and that village updates can be posted on the borough web site.

Mr. Tom Bolen said that if a need or problem arises please contact the borough as soon as possible.

The village teleconference ended at 10:49 A.M.
