The Annual Arctic Business Gathering is sponsored by the Northwest Arctic Borough, NANA Regional Corporation and Maniilaq Association.  This year’s Gathering is dedicated to Celebrating the Arts.  In addition to presentations on business ideas, financing, and management, The Gathering will feature roundtable discussions on the development of   arts and crafts as a significant contributor to the area’s economy and tourism opportunities.  The Gathering will host competition and awards in six different arts and crafts categories, as well as the sale of crafts to retailers and the general public.

 

Who should attend?    Artists, craftspeople, and all who are interested in starting a business or improving an existing business

 

When:                         The Gathering will take place from April 24-27, 2001 between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:30 pm.

 

Where:                        The National Guard Armory in Kotzebue

 

Special guests:            Rebecca Seib, First National Development Institute

                                    Saunders McNeill, Alaska State Council on the Arts

                                    Charles Becker, Alaska Export Assistance Center

                                    Local and regional artists

Special Features

 

  • Competition in the categories of carving, maskmaking, sewing, jewelry, baskets    and etching/drawing/painting

 

  • Sale of Alaska Native art and crafts is encouraged throughout The Gathering, particularly from 3:30-6:00 pm each evening

 

  • Sale of raw materials such as ivory, whalebone, baleen and furs is also encouraged

 

  • Small business loans, in the form of PFD assignments, will be available through the Northwest Arctic Borough Economic Development Commission

 

  • Personal business cards will be produced on request for those attending The Gathering, courtesy of the Northwest Arctic Borough

 

  • For interested artists, sample work and artists will be photographed for presentation on ArctiCraft, the borough’s new website
