ENERGYStreet lights LED NWABOR

PROPANE
Together with ANGDA, we are pursuing the possibility of a demonstration project for implementation of electric generation with propane as energy source.  It is clear that more and more people are recognizing that developing the stranded resources on the North Slope is of vital interest to Alaska. If a production plant was made at Prudhoe, then it is likely that a drop of 30% in the price of delivered propane, would allow significant savings for the rural households that would change to propane for cooking and drying purposes.

NWAB ENERGY PROJECT2.2 Honeywell Wind Generator
A Honeywell 2.2K wind generator has been installed on the NWAB office building in Kotzebue. It will help offset the cost of electricity for the borough, saving approximately $ 2,500.00 - 3,000.00/year. It will be a test case to see if this version of wind generation is suitable for our region. The unit starts charging at very low wind 0.5miles/hour, installed cost will be about $ 13,000.00. LED lights are continuing to be installed throughout the office as well.

WiIND/DIESEL FOR DEERING, BUCKLAND, NOORVIK
The wind-diesel feasibility report for Deering and Buckland are now complete. Phase 2 (conceptual design) will now start for both communities.   In Noorvik, additional wind studies will continue with a MET tower secured through a lease agreement from NSB. AVEC have also secured funding for 3 small Skystreams for installation in Noorvik. The units will basically offset the plants electric usage, but will also show via direct energy production, feasibility for wind/diesel in Noorvik.

TED ENERGY SMART METERS
Noorvik has now been completed and Kivalina is scheduled for installation.  At this point, the TED smart meters have been installed in the following communities: Ambler, Shungnak, Kobuk, Noorvik, Noatak and Buckland.  We should have all units installed before springtime, with the exception of Kotzebue, which is scheduled for next fall.

“ENERGY WISE” BY RURALCAP, NANA, NWAB
This project started in September and is ongoing for Ambler, Noorvik, Shungnak, Buckland, Kivalina  and Noatak. A collaborative proposal is underway to implement the “Energy Wise” program for six of our communities this fall.  This program perfectly match out the energy awareness project with the energy meters; we are partnering with NANA and RuralCap on the program.

COSMOS HILLS HYDRO PROJECT ( UPPER KOBUK )
This is the most promising project for the Upper Kobuk.  Estimated cost for full development including an electric inter-tie to Ambler is $ 50-60M.  So far, the four climate/hydrological stations at Cosmos Creek, Wesley Creek, Dahl Creek and Kogoluktuk River are performing well and data and video link is available @ http://cosmoshydro.org/

SOLAR-PV FOR WATER PLANTS.
The design phase of the project will take place during the winter months  of 2011-2012. A delay in the commissioning of the new water plant in Ambler is holding this project up at this time.  Construction of the solar Array is expected to take place in April-May 2012.  Initiated from our CIAP Grant, this project promises to help run our Waterplant/Sewer systems at a lower cost of operation, due to the harnessed electrical power from the sun during March-September.

Strategic Energy Plan

"Your needs will be met once you can find a way of projecting energy and fulfilling someone else's need." Stuart Wilde

NORTHWEST ARCTIC STEERING COMMITTEE
In 2008 the Region came together in the summer Energy Summit. Out of that meeting a concern arose, that the Region needed to speak with one voice.
To make sure that all Communities had a voice in the implementation of that plan, the Energy Steering Committee was created by the NWAB in the spring of 2009.
