Richard Mashburn
The most prolific of all the area mask makers, Richard’s experience is visible in his work.. His caribou skin masks hang on walls in probably half the countries of the world! All the natural materials for Richard’s creations come from the wildlife-rich area surrounding his home village of Selawik. After the caribou hide is cleared of flesh and hair, it is soaked for pliability before being stretched over a carved wooden mold. The dried hide holds the shape of the mold and is then decorated with a wolf or fox ruff. Every mask is totally unique and a symbol of the traditional subsistence culture of Northwest Alaska.
