| Larry lives and practices his craft in the Inupiat coastal village of Kivalina, some 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle. His carved whale vertebrae masks, which have historically been purchased only by infrequent visitors to his village, reflect the close tie between the Inupiat people and the great sea mammals. A small number of bowhead and beluga whales are harvested each spring in the area, providing both traditional food for hundreds of residents and material for the region’s carvers. |
