Adolph Shagloak

House 660
Kotzebue, AK 99752

Born in Point Hope, Adolph has been carving since the age of nine . . . that’s 37 years! His unique style of sculpturing ivory, baleen, antler and whalebone is accomplished almost exclusively through the deft use of files. His signature work, the half-mask design, incorporates an Inupiat face and a sea mammal, intrinsically tied together. The pieces are also adorned with local furs or feathers of geese, ducks or ptarmigan. Adolph and his carving were featured on the popular television show Sesame Street in 1986, when the program was taped in Kotzebue.
