Mission Statement

“The Northwest Arctic Borough will work aggressively to improve the quality of life for all residents.”

Selawik

Elders

  • The Elder’s Council has solicited funds to construct a 20 X 30 tent frame.  The funds came from the Borough, NANA and Maniilaq Association.  With this, now the Elder’s Council would like to have seasonal activities for all in the village.  Subsistence, survival, food gathering and storage are important activities that the Elder’s would liketo have going.

  • Also, there are two classes, Inupiaq Studies, that are going around and interviewing the village elder’s about their life, things they did while they were growing up and such.  We are getting a lot of information, a lot of “algaqsruq-ing” too.

    Booster Club

  • This group was recently formed; it’s a group of young leaders who want to be a second helping hand to the academic and athletic groups within the school.  The group has just accomplished running the annual thanksgiving tournament, which was a success, and $17,000 was raised.  It’s off to a great start; we will continue to do more fundraising to keep going.

Selawik IRA Council

  • Two new homes were built and still awaiting electricity hookup along with water and sewer installation.  This is the NAHASDA housing program that the Selawik IRA runs.  The program builds two homes a year.

Selawik IRA Fuel Project

  • The Selawik IRA Fuel Project is owned by the tribe, it is run by local people, and currently waiting to upgrade its building, and eventually a new facility.

    Search & Rescue

  • This group of community members deserves a lot of recognition for their commitment to work hard and work together to get the job done.  They travel to different villages to help other communities, when they are in need.  This past summer they worked especially hard, they are a blessing.

    Youth

  • There are mostly activities at the gym, so far.  We have yet to bring kids in to skin sewing,  cloth sewing activities,  and other activities.  We are also working to form a student council within the school, to get interested kids into “government” activities.
